Make 2021 the best year yet

Did you know that the average child spends 1,200 hours a year in front of a screen? Inspired by this statistic, Ginny Yurich began the campaign to help children spend 1,000 hours outside. Healthy Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods is accepting the challenge, and you can be part of the movement!

Why spend time outdoors?

According to Nielsen’s latest Total Audience Report, on average, Americans aged 18 and older spend more than four hours a day watching TV and 3 hours and 45 minutes interacting with their smartphone on an average day. Spending 1,000 hours outside in one year averages out to 3 hours a day, so less than you might spend on your phone or in front of your TV!

Below, Dr. Asha Shajahan discusses more of the wonderful health benefits of spending time outdoors.
